WHEELING, W.Va. – Shepherd University handed Wheeling Jesuit a 2-0 upset in first round action of the WVIAC Men’s Soccer Tournament at Wheeling Island Stadium on Thursday night.
Junior midfielder/forward Kevin Doyle (Leesburg, VA/Loudoun County) scored an unassisted goal at the 38:06 mark to give the Rams a 1-0 lead at the break.
Shepherd added an insurance goal at the 59:56 mark when freshman forward/midfielder Bryce Fugitt (Waldorf, MD/North Point) scored on an assist from senior forward Shane Lowery (Boonsboro, MD/Boonsboro).
Wheeling Jesuit had a 14-8 advantage in shots and a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.
Freshmen goalkeeper Alex Aleshire (Hagerstown, MD/Willliamsport) recorded six saves for the Rams. Cody Thompson had four saves for the Cardinals. Aleshire recorded his eighth shutout of the season to tie the single season mark set by Pat Quinn in 2005.
Shepherd improves to 9-8-1, while Wheeling Jesuit falls to 11-8. The fifth-seeded Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to top-seeded University of Charleston for semifinal action of the WVIAC Tournament. Action will begin at noon at Schoenbaum Stadium.
