SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Nineteenth-ranked Wheeling Jesuit held off an upset bid by Shepherd University for a 3-2 win in WVIAC volleyball action at the Butcher Center on Friday night. The Cardinals recorded a 25-22, 25-22, 23-25, 23-25, 15-11 victory.
Junior outside hitter Melani Lewis (Bay Shore, NY/Brentwood) had 14 kills and 20 digs, while senior outside hitter/libero Kasey Mercier (Baltimore, MD/Mount de Sales Academy) contributed 11 kills and 13 digs.
Senior setter Sara Michael (Winchester, VA/James Wood/Hagerstown CC) contributed 44 assists and 18 digs. Senior Lauren Gardner (Clarkston, MI/Clarkston) contributed 20 digs.
Jenna Pew had 14 kills and 14 digs to lead Wheeling Jesuit. Alissa Ware added 13 kills.
Shepherd falls to 6-16, 2-7 in WVIAC play, while Wheeling Jesuit improves to 26-2, 12-0. The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host West Liberty for a 1 p.m. match.
