WHEELING, W.Va. – Shepherd University dropped a 3-1 decision to Wheeling Jesuit in WVIAC men’s soccer action at Wheeling Jesuit on Wednesday evening.
The Cardinals took a 1-0 when Victor Picchio scored on a feed from Luke Roan at the 11:40 mark.
Wheeling Jesuit took a 2-0 advantage on an unassisted tally by Carlos Avila at the 31:59 mark.
Shepherd cut the deficit to 2-1 when senior forward Shane Lowery (Boonsboro, MD/Boonsboro) scored on an header with an assist from junior midfielder Abel Setegn (Arakilo, Ethiopia/Winston Churchill {MD}) on a corner kick.
Jeff Cancelmi scored on an assist from Roan at the 63:19 mark to give the Cardinals an insurance goal.
The Cardinals had a 14-9 edge in shots while corner kicks were even at 5-all.
Freshmen goalkeeper Alex Aleshire (Hagerstown, MD/Willliamsport) recorded three saves the Rams. Cody Thompson had three saves for the Cardinals.
Shepherd falls to 3-5-1, 1-2-0 in conference play, while Wheeling Jesuit improves to 5-4, 3-1. The Rams return to action on October 4 when they travel to Cedarville for a 5 p.m. contest.
