FAIRMONT, W.Va. – The Shepherd University volleyball team opened the 2012 season with a pair of wins at the Falcon Fest tournament at Fairmont State on Friday. The Rams took a 25-18, 25-23, 18-25, 25-20 win over Edinboro in an early match and later added a 25-16, 21-25, 25-20, 28-26 triumph over Notre Dame College.
Junior middle hitter Meg Kenny (Lynchburg, VA/E.C. Glass) had nine kills and six blocks, while senior outside hitter/libero Kasey Mercier (Baltimore, MD/Mount de Sales Academy) had six kills, eight digs, and five aces to lead the Rams against Edinboro.
Senior setter Sara Michael (Winchester, VA/James Wood/Hagerstown CC) added 26 assists and 10 digs.
Tabitha Meeks had seven kills and eight digs for Edinboro.
Kenny and junior outside hitter Kayla Walker (Palmyra, VA/Fluvanna County) each had 15 kills and four blocks in the win over Notre Dame College. Junior outside hitter Melani Lewis (Bay Shore, NY/Brentwood) added eight kills and seven digs, while Michael recorded 49 assists, seven digs, and five blocks.
Kristen Hill had 15 kills to lead Notre Dame.
Shepherd begins the season at 2-0. The Rams return to action on Saturday when they face Ursuline at noon and Point Park at 6 p.m. in final day action of the Falcon Fest.
