SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Shepherd University head men's basketball coach Justin Namolik announced today that five student-athletes have signed letters-of-intent to play basketball for the Rams in the upcoming 2012-13 season.
Austin Cunningham (Belpre, OH/Ohio Valley University), a 6-foot-2 sophomore guard, averaged 16.6 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 4.4 assists for Ohio Valley and was named to the WVIAC All-Freshman team. During his senior year at Vincent Warren High School, he averaged 19.1 points, 5.4 rebounds, 4.8 assists, and 3.4 steals. He was named Third Team All-Ohio and was selected as the District 13 Coaches Association Player of the Year.
“Austin has proved he can produce in the West Virginia conference,” said Namolik. “He will provide offense for us in the backcourt with his scoring and passing ability.”
Logan Holloman (Hedgesville, WV/Liberty University), a 6-foot-5 junior forward, was a member of the Liberty University basketball program for the last three years. A 2009 graduate of Musselman High School, he averaged 12 points, seven rebounds, and three assists per game during his senior year for the Applemen.
“Logan has worked extremely hard over the last three years to improve as a basketball player,” stated Namolik. “His ability to rebound and shoot the three is going to help us.”
Kevin Jones (Washington D.C./Indiana University of Pennsylvania), a 6-foot-6 junior forward, averaged 3.9 points and 3.1 rebounds for Indiana University of Pennsylvania. A 2009 graduate of Bishop O’Connell High School, Kevin attended Lackawanna Community College for one year and averaged 10.9 points and 6.7 rebounds.
“Kevin is an athletic forward that will provide defense and rebounding for us in the front court,” said Namolik. “He fits our system very well and I expect him to excel for us.”
Rob Lawler (Winchester, VA/John Handley High School), a 6-foot-2 guard was a First Team Northwestern District selection, was named to the Winchester Star First Team, and he was selected to the All Region Team. For his career, he averaged 16.5 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 1.7 assists while shooting 39 percent from three-point range.
“Rob is a very good shooter,” stated Namolik. “He will develop into a solid contributor for us as he improves defensively.”
Skyler Roman (Chambersburg, PA/Chambersburg High School), a 6-foot-0 guard, missed his senior season due to a knee injury. As a junior, he averaged 16 points, three rebounds, three assists, and three steals per game. He was a Mid Penn Conference 1st team selection, Harrisburg Patriot News Big 15 First team, Public Opinion Player of the Year, and a WHAG Fab 5 selection.
“Skyler will redshirt this season, giving him the opportunity to learn from the upperclassman on our team,” said Namolik. “He will become a very good point guard for us in the future.”
In addition to these five student-athletes, the Rams welcome back Morgan McDonald who has fully recovered from a knee injury that caused him to miss last season.
“With eleven returning players and the additions of this recruiting class, this is going to be one of the deepest teams I have ever coached,” stated Namolik. “Every day at practice is going to be extremely competitive which will make us a tougher team and force us to improve daily.”
