SHEPHERD ANNOUNCES ATHLETICS AWARD WINNERS (6-29-2012)
SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University director of athletics B.J. Pumroy recently announced several award winners for the 2011-12 year.
Senior Nathan Minnich (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro Area) of the baseball team was named Male Athlete of the Year, while junior Nicole Ruane (Sykesville, MD/Century) of the women’s lacrosse team took Female Athlete of the Year honors.
Minnich, who earned the Tino Martinez Award as the most outstanding player in NCAA II baseball, led NCAA II in four categories and ranked second in four more. Minnich led the Rams to a 30-22 overall mark. The Rams won the WVIAC Tournament and advanced to the Atlantic Regional Tournament.
Ruane led the Rams to a record-setting 11-4 mark this season. She paced the Rams in points (78), goals (62), draw controls (60), and ground balls (44).
Minnich also gained Male Senior Athlete of the Year honors, while Brianna Hines (Woodbridge, VA/Potomac) of the women’s soccer team gained Female Senior Athlete of the Year honors.
Hines, a three-time All-WVIAC selection for the Rams, gained first team honors in 2011. She is ranked third on the program’s all-time list for both goals (30) and points (84) while ranking second in game-winning goals (9).
Elijah Davis (Silver Spring, MD/Wheaton) of the football team and Lauren Jeschelnik (Huntingtown, MD/Huntingtown) of the volleyball team were named WVIAC Senior Scholar-Athlete award winners.
Junior Justin Bryan (Charles Town, WV/Jefferson) of the men's basketball team was named the winner of the Ram Award. The award is given to the Shepherd student-athlete who exemplifies the best attributes of an NCAA II athlete.
Jonathan Thayil, head coach of both the men’s and women’s soccer programs, gained Coach of the Year honors. Thayil, in his first year at the helm of the women’s program, guided the Rams to an 8-8-2 mark as the team rebounded from a three win season in 2010.
The Shepherd men’s tennis team earned the award as the male team with the top grade point average.
The Shepherd women’s basketball team was awarded as the female team with the top grade point average. The squad also gained the Sam Marchio Sportsmanship Award given by the WVIAC officials.
The Rams Cup award as selected by the Student Athlete Advisory Committee was presented to the volleyball team.
Nathan Minnich was named Male Athlete of the Year and Male Senior Athlete Award winner.
Brianna Hines was named the Female Senior Athlete Award winner.
Jonathan Thayil was named Coach of the Year.
The men's tennis team gained the award for the male team with the top grade point average.
The women's basketball team gained the award for the female team with the top grade point average.
They were also honored by the WVIAC as the Sam Marchio Award winner.

The volleyball team captured the Rams Cup award.
