SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University rapped 31 hits on the day en route to a sweep over Glenville State in WVIAC baseball doubleheader action at Fairfax Field on Tuesday. The Rams earned a 10-5 win in game one and added a 19-1 victory in the nightcap.
Shepherd took a 5-0 lead in the third inning in game one as four different Rams drove in runs.
The Rams added four more runs in the fourth to take control of the game. Sophomore outfielder Michael Lott (Woodbridge, VA/Woodbridge) led off with a single and scored on a triple by sophomore outfielder Aaron Scoville (Centreville, VA/Westfield). Senior first baseman Nathan Minnich (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro Area Sr.) followed with a home run down the right field line that was initially ruled foul, but the call was reversed. Minnich set a new Shepherd season recorded with his 20th round-tripper of the season. Junior outfielder Jake Cook (Centreville, MD/Queen Anne’s) added an RBI-single.
Lott and Cook each had three hits for the Rams.
Brock McClung went 2-for-4 with a pair of homers to pace Glenville State.
Sophomore pitcher Paul Hvozdovic (Herndon, VA/Herndon) (5.0 IP, 4 H, 6 Ks, 1 BB,) picked up the win to improve to 10-3. Hvozdovic tied the Shepherd season record for wins. He shares the mark Brian Renner (2002) and J.R. Fitzwater (2003). Ian Morris took the loss for the Pioneers.
Holding a 2-0 lead, Shepherd plated 11 runs on six hits in the second inning in the nightcap to pull away. Senior third baseman Travis Sluger (Germantown, MD/Williamsport/Hagerstown CC) had a three-run double to key the rally.
Junior second baseman Chad Murphy (North Olmsted, OH/North Olmsted) went 4-for-5 and drove in a pair of runs, while Sluger added a 2-for-5 effort with four RBIs to pace the Rams.
Lott, Scoville, and Minnich added three hits apiece.
Philip Longnecker and Steven Miller each had a hit for the Pioneers.
Freshman reliever Brian Martin (Westminster, MD/Winters Mill) picked up the win to improve to 2-0. Brock McClung took the loss for the Pioneers.
Shepherd improves to 25-18, 17-11 in WVIAC play, while Glenville State falls to 5-35, 3-27. The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Pitt-Johnstown for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
