SHEPHERD BASEBALL DROPS PAIR TO FAIRMONT STATE (4-20-2012)
SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University dropped a doubleheader to Fairmont State in WVIAC baseball action at Fairfax Field on Friday. The Falcons took a 5-3 win in game one and added a 9-8 triumph in the nightcap.
 
Fairmont State took a 3-0 lead in the second inning in game one on a three-run blast by Shaun Vernesoni.
 
The Falcons took a 4-0 advantage behind an RBI-single by Tyler Barnette.
 
Shepherd cut the lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run homer by home junior second baseman Chad Murphy (North Olmsted, OH/North Olmsted).
 
Fairmont State added a run in the fifth on an RBI-single by Greg Hawkins to take a 5-2 advantage.
 
The Rams added a run in the sixth on an RBI-single off the bat of sophomore outfielder Michael Lott (Woodbridge, VA/Woodbridge).
 
Murphy, junior outfielder Jake Cook (Centreville, MD/Queen Anne’s),  and sophomore outfielder Aaron Scoville (Centreville, VA/Westfield) each had a pair of hits for the Rams.
 
Vernesoni, Barnette, and Jimmy Earp each had two hits for the Falcons.
 
Sophomore pitcher Paul Hvozdovic (Herndon, VA/Herndon) (5.0 IP, 6 H, 8 Ks, 1 BB, 4 ER) took the loss to fall to 9-3. Tyler Kincaid (4-3) gained the win while Nick Mayle earned the save.
 
Lott belted a three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game at 8-8 in the nightcap, but Trevor Funk had an RBI-double in the eighth to lift the Falcons to the win.
 
Lott went 3-for-4 to pace the Rams.  Senior shortstop Travis Sluger (Germantown, MD/Williamsport/Hagerstown CC),
sophomore third baseman Brandon Coffey (Manassas, VA/Osbourn), and Cook added a pair of hits. Cook also belted a two-run homer.
 
Ryan Fondriest and Hawkins each had home runs for the Falcons.
 
Senior reliever Justin Byrd (Mamora, NJ/Atlantic Cape CC) (1-2) took the loss for the Rams, while Mayle gained the win to improve to 2-1.
 
Shepherd falls to 25-15, 17-8 in WVIAC play, while Fairmont State improves to 18-21, 15-11. The two teams return to action on Saturday at Fairfax Field for a 1 p.m. contest.
