INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State swept Shepherd University in WVIAC softball action at West Virginia State on Sunday. The Yellow Jackets earned an 8-0 win in game one and added a 1-0 victory in the nightcap.
Brittany Hyatt hit a three-run double in the sixth to key a four-run rally and help lift State to the win in game one.
Mattie Best, Desiree Giffin, Alana Weyant, and Poppy Ramey each added a pair of hits for the Yellow Jackets.
Sophomore first baseman Sam McQuade (McConnellsburg, PA/McConnellsburg) went 3-for-3 for the Rams.
Junior pitcher Tricia Bettura (Canfield, OH/Canfield) (5.2 IP, 0 K, 1 BB) took the loss to fall to 12-13. Kelsey Lorraine (6.0 IP, 4 K, 2 BB) picked up the win for the Yellow Jackets.
Best walked in the bottom of the seventh and later scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Weyant to give the Yellow Jackets a 1-0 triumph in the nightcap.
Both teams managed just five hits each in the contest.
Junior pitcher Tiffany Biggs (Harpers Ferry, WV/Jefferson/Potomac State) (6.2 IP, 2 Ks, 1 BB) took the loss to drop to 15-6. Sara Pelegreen (7.0 IP 6 Ks, 1 BB) gained the win for West Virginia State.
Shepherd falls to 29-20, 16-6 in WVIAC action, while West Virginia State improves to 34-11, 16-4. The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they host Alderson-Broaddus for a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
