SHEPHERD BASEBALL HOLDS OFF ALDERSON-BROADDUS, 11-9 (4-15-2012)

PHILIPPI, W.Va. – Shepherd University used a 13-hit attack en route to a 11-9 win over Alderson-Broaddus in WVIAC baseball action at Alderson-Broaddus on Sunday.
 
Shepherd took a 6-0 lead in the second inning with a two-run single by sophomore outfielder Aaron Scoville (Centreville, VA/Westfield) highlighting the rally.
 
Alderson-Broaddus plated three runs in the third behind an RBI-double by Mitch Roy and RBI-singles from Mike Hackett and Kirby Clemens.
 
The Rams added a pair of runs in the fourth on a solo homer by senior designated hitter Nash Hutter (Sunland, CA/Verdugo Hills/Glendale CC) and an RBI-single by senior first baseman Nathan Minnich (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro Area Sr.)  
 
The Battlers rallied to tie the game at 8-8 all in the bottom of the fourth with five runs. Jeff Conley had a three-run double to key the rally.
 
Shepherd took a 10-8 lead in the fifth on a two-run double by Scoville, but Alderson-Broaddus rallied in the bottom of the frame after a solo homer by Sean Collette to cut the deficit to 10-9.
 
The Rams added an insurance run in the ninth on an RBI-single by freshman shortstop Bryan DiRosario (Alexandria, VA/Hayfield Secondary School).
 
DiRosario went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, while Scoville and sophomore outfielder Michael Lott (Woodbridge, VA/Woodbridge) each had a pair of hits.
 
Collette went 3-for-3 to pace the Battlers.
 
Sophomore reliever Trevor Appleby (Chambersburg, PA/Chambersburg) (3.2 IP, 7H, 1 ER, 3 Ks, 1 BB) gained the win to improve to 5-3, while sophomore pitcher Paul Hvozdovic (Herndon, VA/Herndon) (2 Ks,  0 BB)  tossed hitless ball over the final inning and a third to earn the save. Bobby Williams took the loss for the Battlers.
 
Shepherd improves to 25-13, 18-6 in WVIAC play, while Alderson-Broaddus falls to 18-20, 14-8. The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Bluefield State for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
