SHEPHERD SOFTBALL SWEEPS CHARLESTON (4-14-2012)
CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Junior pitcher Tricia Bettura (Canfield, OH/Canfield) tossed a one-hitter in game one and junior pitcher Tiffany Biggs (Harpers Ferry, WV/Jefferson/Potomac State) scattered four hits in the nightcap to lead Shepherd University to a sweep over University of Charleston in WVIAC softball action at Charleston on Saturday. The Rams earned a 2-0 triumph in game one and added a 3-1 win in the nightcap.
Logan Tetrick got an infield single in the seventh to break up Bettura’s no-hit bid in game one.
Shepherd plated a pair of runs in the eighth inning behind an RBI-singles by senior third baseman Chelsie Oals (Hedgesville, WV/Hedgesville) and junior outfielder Bianca Biondillo (Canfield, OH/Canfield).
Oals, Biondillo, and sophomore first baseman Sam McQuade (McConnellsburg, PA/McConnellsburg) each had a pair of hits for the Rams.
Bettura fanned 10 and walked none as she improved to 12-12. Emily Fultz took the loss for Charleston to drop to 17-8.
Trailing 1-0 in the nightcap, Shepherd tied the game with a run in the sixth inning as Oals led off with a walk and later scored on a wild pitch.
The Rams got an RBI-single by shortstop Taylor Bolton (Inwood, WV/Martinsburg) and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Oals in the seventh to earn the sweep.
Freshman catcher Savannah Snyder (Elkton, MD/Padua Academy) went 2-for-3 with a run scored to pace the Rams.
Aspen Echelmeier went 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead the Golden Eagles.
Biggs fanned five and walked none to improve to 15-5 on the year. Charleston starter Kelsee Blackwell took the loss to fall to 17-9.
Shepherd improves to 29-18, 16-4 in WVIAC action, while Charleston, ranked fifth in the Atlantic Region, falls to 26-16, 14-4. The Rams return to action on Sunday when they travel to West Virginia State for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
