SHEPHERD SOFTBALL SPLITS WITH FAIRMONT STATE (4-11-2012)

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Freshman pinch-runner Elisa Orlandi (Owings, MD/ Northern) slid under the tag at the plate on a fielder’s choice off the bat of senior third baseman Chelsie Oals (Hedgesville, WV/Hedgesville) in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift Shepherd University to a 1-0 win Fairmont State in the nightcap in softball doubleheader action at Shepherd on Wednesday.  The Falcons rallied for a 4-3 win in game one.

Junior pitcher Tiffany Biggs (Harpers Ferry, WV/Jefferson/Potomac State) (8.0 IP, 11 Ks, 2 BB) tossed a two-hitter in the nightcap to improve to 14-5. Nikki Nuzum took the loss to fall to 7-8.

Shepherd took a 1-0 advantage in the first inning in game one when Oals led off with a single and later scored on a single off the bat of freshman outfielder Tayler Schaefer (Dunkirk, MD/Northern).

The Rams added a pair in the second to take a 3-0 lead. Freshman designated player Savannah Snyder (Elkton, MD/Padua Academy) tripled and scored on a single by senior second baseman Delaney Bell (Glen Burnie, MD/Archbishop Spalding). Bell was later plated on a single by sophomore outfielder Jess Mason (Martinsburg, WV/Hedgesville).

The Falcons picked up a run in the fourth when Abbey Wilson doubled and later scored on an error.
 
Fairmont State added a pair of runs in the sixth behind RBIs from Carly Mundie and Brittany Tallhamer to tie the game at 3-all.
Gretchen Herzberger led off the seventh with a double and came home on a triple by Terri Lynn Wolfe to give the Falcons the win.
Oals, Snyder, and Schaefer each had a pair of hits for the Rams.
Wolfe and Wilson each had two hits for the Falcons.
Chelsea Cobb (7.0 IP,  9 H, 3 ER, 7 Ks, 0 BB) picked up the win for the Falcons to improve to 14-5. Junior pitcher Tricia Bettura (Canfield, OH/Canfield) (7.0 IP, 8 H, 3 ER, 6 Ks, 0 BB) took the loss for the Rams to fall to 11-12.  
Shepherd moves to 27-18, 14-4 in WVIAC action,  while Fairmont State is now 23-16, 12-4. The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to Charleston for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
