BLUEFIELD, Va. – Shepherd University swept Bluefield State in WVIAC softball doubleheader action at Bluefield State on Saturday. Shepherd earned an 8-0 win in game one and added a 9-0 victory in the nightcap.
Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in game one in the first inning on a RBI-single by sophomore first baseman Sam McQuade (McConnellsburg, PA/McConnellsburg).
The Rams took advantage of an outfield error to plate two runs in the second to increase their lead to 3-0.
Shepherd scored five runs in the fifth to notch the five-inning triumph. Freshman shortstop Shanan Plunkett (Hagerstown, MD/North Hagerstown) had a two-run single to key the rally.
McQuade, Plunkett, and junior outfielder Bianca Biondillo (Canfield, OH/Canfield) each had a pair of hits to lead the Rams.
Junior pitcher Tricia Bettura (Canfield, OH/Canfield) (5.0 IP, 4 Ks, 2 BB) tossed a two-hitter for the Rams to improve to 11-10.
The Rams took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of the nightcap when freshman catcher Savannah Snyder (Elkton, MD/Padua Academy) doubled and later scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of senior second baseman Delaney Bell (Glen Burnie, MD/Archbishop Spalding).
Shepherd plated eight runs on five hits in the fifth to gain the sweep. Freshman outfielder Tayler Schaefer (Dunkirk, MD/Northern) belted a two-run single to highlight the rally.
Junior pitcher Tiffany Biggs (Harpers Ferry, WV/Jefferson/Potomac State) (5.0 IP, 3 H, 6 Ks, 0 BB) gained the victory for the Rams to improve to 13-4.
Shepherd improves to 26-15, 13-3 in WVIAC action, while Bluefield State falls to 1-22, 0-12. The Rams return to action on Monday when they host Lock Haven for a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
