SHEPHERD BASEBALL SPLITS WITH DAVIS AND ELKINS (3-21-2012)
ELKINS, W.Va. – Shepherd University split with Davis & Elkins in WVIAC baseball doubleheader action at Davis & Elkins on Wednesday. The Rams earned a 10-3 win in game one, while the Senators took a 12-6 triumph in the nightcap.
Senior first baseman Nathan Minnich (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro Area Sr.) went 3-for-4 with three RBIs to lead the Rams in game one.
Junior second baseman Chad Murphy (North Olmsted, OH/North Olmsted) went 1-for-2 with two RBIs, while senior shortstop Nash Hutter (Sunland, CA/Verdugo Hills/Glendale CC) and sophomore outfielder Michael Lott (Woodbridge, VA/Woodbridge) each had a pair of hits.
Sophomore pitcher Trevor Appleby (Chambersburg, PA/Chambersburg) (5.0 IP, 5 H, 3 Ks, 1 BB) picked up the win to improve to 3-2. Andrew Ford took the loss for the Senators.
Eric Doyle went 2-for-4 with a grand slam to pace a 10-hit Senator attack in the nightcap.
Sophomore designated hitter Ryan Messina (St. James, NY/Smithtown East) went 2-for-3 with a three-run homer to lead the Rams.
Freshman pitcher Jamie Driver (Broad Run, VA/Kettle Run) (0-2) took the loss for the Rams, while Cory Keesee gained the win to improve to 1-2.
Shepherd moves to 12-10, 5-4 in WVIAC action, while Davis & Elkins is now 9-12, 5-4. The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Wheeling Jesuit for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
