SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Senior first baseman Nathan Minnich (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro Area Sr.) went 3-4 with a pair of home runs to lead Shepherd University to a 12-2 win over Lock Haven in baseball action at the Ram Invitational at Fairfax Field on Friday. Indiana (Pa.) held on for an 8-6 win over the Rams in the later game. Minnich set a new Shepherd career mark for home runs with 42. He surpasses the old mark of 40 set by Mike Spry (2000-03).
Minnich drove in five runs and scored three. Sophomore second baseman Brandon Coffey (Manassas, VA/Osbourn) added a 4-for-4 effort with three RBIs and three runs scored as Shepherd used a 14-hit attack en route to the win.
Sophomore outfielder Aaron Scoville (Centreville, VA/Westfield), senior third baseman Travis Sluger (Germantown, MD/Williamsport/Hagerstown CC), and sophomore outfielder Michael Lott (Woodbridge, VA/Woodbridge) each added a pair of hits for the Rams.
Austin Botts belted a two-run homer to lead Lock Haven.
Sophomore pitcher Paul Hvozdovic (Herndon, VA/Herndon) (7.0 IP, 5 Ks, 3 BB, 2 ER) picked up the win to improve to 2-1. Colin Mills (0-1) took the loss for the Bald Eagles.
Matt Szukics belted a three-run homer in the third inning to lead IUP to the win in the late game.
Sophomore outfielder Ryan Messina (St. James, NY/Smithtown East) had a two-run single and senior shortstop Nash Hutter (Sunland, CA/Verdugo Hills/Glendale CC) added a three-run homer to lead the Rams.
Sophomore pitcher Trevor Appleby (Chambersburg, PA/Chambersburg) (2.1 IP, 2 Ks, 4 BB) took the loss to fall to 2-2. IUP starter Greg Stewart (6.0 IP, 5Ks, 6 BB) gained the win to improve to 1-0.
Shepherd moves to 5-5, Lock Haven falls to 3-4, while Indiana (Pa.) improves to 2-3. The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Indiana (Pa.) at noon in second day action of the Ram Invitational.
