SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University pounded out 19 hits on the day en route to a doubleheader sweep of Pitt-Johnstown in baseball action at Fairfax Field on Saturday. The Rams held on for a 9-7 win in game one and added a 10-0 triumph in the nightcap.
Senior first baseman Nathan Minnich (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro Area Sr.) went 4-for-4 with three doubles and two RBIs, while junior catcher Chad Murphy went 3-for-4 with a homer, three RBIs, and three runs scored to lead the Rams in the opener.
Drew Westover went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs to lead the Mountain Cats.
Sophomore pitcher Trevor Appleby (Chambersburg, PA/Chambersburg) (5.0 IP, 4 Ks, 2 BB, 4 R, 2 ER) picked up the win to improve to 2-1 on the year. John Fees took the loss for Pitt-Johnstown.
Clinging to a 2-0 lead in the nightcap, the Rams plated eight runs in the fifth to pull away for the win. Sophomore outfielder Ryan Messina (St. James, NY/Smithtown East) had a two-run single and senior shortstop Nash Hutter (Sunland, CA/Verdugo Hills/Glendale CC) added a two-run triple to highlight the rally.
Sophomore outfielder Aaron Scoville (Centreville, VA/Westfield) went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a pair of runs scored and sophomore pitcher Brandon Coffey(Manassas, VA/Osbourn) helped his own cause with a pair of hits.
Coffey (5.0 IP, 3 Ks, 0 BB, 2 H) picked up the win for the Rams to improve to 1-1. Freshman Bryan DiRosario (Alexandria, VA/Hayfield Secondary School) allowed only one hit over the final two frames. Elliot Chamberlain took the loss for UPJ.
Shepherd improves to 4-4, while Pitt Johnstown drops to 2-3. The Rams return to action on Friday when they host Lock Haven at noon and Indiana (Pa.) at 3 p.m. in first day action of the Ram Invitational.
