LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Alabama swept Shepherd University in baseball action at Tartt Field on Friday. The Tigers earned an 11-2 win in game one and added a 4-0 triumph in the nightcap.
West Alabama used a 14-hit attack en route to the win in game one. Josh Podoris went 4-for-4 and drove in four runs to lead the Tigers. Brett Langham added a 3-for- 5 effort.
Sophomore infielder Brandon Coffey (Manassas, VA/Osbourn) had an RBI-double to plate sophomore outfielder Aaron Scoville (Centreville, VA/Westfield) and senior first baseman Nathan Minnich (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro Area Sr.) added a solo homer for his second round-tripper of the season.
Shepherd starter Paul Hvozdovic (Herndon, VA/ Herndon) (4.0 IP, 4 ER, 4 Ks, 2 BB) took the loss to fall to 0-1. Barry Meeks, coming off NCBWA National Pitcher of the Week honors, fanned nine and walked one to improve to 2-0.
Ladarrius Cole had a two-run double to lead theTigers to the win in the nightcap.
Scoville doubled, while Minnich and junior designated hitter Chad Murphy (North Olmsted, OH/North Olmsted) each singled for the Rams.
Sophomore pitcher Trevor Appleby (Chambersburg, PA/Chambersburg) (4.0 IP, 1 K, 3 BB, 3 ER) took the loss for the Rams to fall to 1-1. Jesse Boyd had six strikeouts and one walk to improve to 2-1. Jeremy White picked up the save.
Shepherd falls to 1-4, while West Alabama improves to 5-4. The two teams return to action on Saturday with doubleheader action beginning at 11 a.m. The games were moved up due the the forecast for inclement weather.
Notes: Nathan Minnich now has 39 career home runs and he moved into a tie with Charlie Drummond for second place on the Shepherd all-time home run list. He needs just one homer to tie Mike Spry for the program record.
