SHEPHERD BASEBALL DOWNS STATE, 10-3 (3-13-2011)
SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. –Shepherd University rapped 15 hits on the day en route to a 10-3 win over West Virginia State in WVIAC baseball action at Fairfax Field on Saturday.
Shepherd took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning behind an RBI-single by junior first baseman Nathan Minnich(Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro Area) and a run-scoring double from senior shortstop Brian Collins (Martinsburg, WV/Jefferson/Frederick CC).
After both teams tallied single runs in the second, Shepherd broke the game open with five runs in the fourth.
A two-run single by Collins highlighted the rally.
Collins led the Rams with a 3-for-4 outing with three runs batted in, while Minnich added a 3-for-4 performance with a pair of runs scored and an RBI.
Freshman third baseman Aaron Scoville (Centreville, VA/Westfield) went 2-for-4 with three runs scored, while freshman outfielder Dillon Regalia (Shenandoah Junction WV/Jefferson) posted a 2-for-4 performance and scored twice.
Freshman catcher Derek Buckley (Toms Brook, VA/Strasburg) went 1-for-4 and drove in a pair of runs.
Billy Smith went 1-for-5 and drove in a run to lead the Yellow Jackets.
Sophomore starter Trevor Appleby (Chambersburg, PA/Chambersburg) (6.1 IP, 5 Ks, 2 BB) picked up the win to improve to 2-0. Senior Justin Byrd (Mamora, NJ/Atlantic Cape CC) (1K, 0 BB) was solid in relief as he allowed only one hit over the final 2 2/3 innings. State starter Jeremy Goodall (1-1) took the loss.
Shepherd improves to 5-5 overall, 1-2 in WVIAC play, while West Virginia State falls to 4-1, 4-1. The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they travel to West Virginia Wesleyan for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
