SHEPHERD MEN SHOCK FAIRMONT STATE, 68-66 (1-19-2011)
SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Freshman guard Marcus Pilgrim (Mitchellville, MD/Bishop McNamara) hit a jumper with nine seconds remaining to lift Shepherd University to a 68-66 win over Fairmont State in WVIAC men’s basketball action at Shepherd on Wednesday night.
Sophomore forward Chad Moore (Winchester, VA/John Handley) scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to pace the Rams. He connected on 8-of-15 shots with a 1-of-2 effort at the foul line. Moore also added three assists and a game-high five steals.
Steve Custis scored 21 points and had 12 rebounds to lead the Falcons. Isaac Thornton added 14 points while Terrence Green had 10.
Shepherd shot 46.7 percent (28-60) from the floor, while Fairmont State posted a 51.8 percent (29-56) effort. The Falcons had a 36-33 edge in rebounding.
Shepherd led by six points at 66-60 with 2:23 left after a layup by senior guard Jonathan Motichka (Chambersburg, PA/Chambersburg).
The Falcons battled back to tie the game at 66-66 with 43 seconds remaining after a layup by Thornton to set up Pilgrim’s game-winning heroics.
The game was tied 36-36 at halftime.
Shepherd improves to 7-9 overall, 4-8 in WVIAC action, while Fairmont State falls to 10-3, 8-3. The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to Washington Adventist for a 9 p.m. game.
