SHEPHERD MEN DOWN SALEM TO END LOSING SKID, 78-62 (1-21-2010)

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va.  – Junior guard Jonathan Motichka (Chambersburg, PA/Chambersburg) scored a game-high 19 points to help lead Shepherd University to a 78-62 win over Salem International (1-14, 1-8) in WVIAC men’s basketball action at Shepherd on Thursday night. The triumph ends an eight game losing skid for the Rams.

Motichka hit 5-of-10 three point attempts and was a perfect 4-of-4 from the foul line.

Senior guard Tyrone Roach (Capitol Heights, MD/Montgomery-Germantown) added 13 points, freshman forward Chad Moore (Winchester, VA/John Handley) had 11, while freshman guard Aeron Spencer (Fredericksburg, VA/Stafford) and freshman forward Sidney McCray (Milton, FL/St. Paul’s (Md.) School) each tossed in 10.

Senior guard Derek Gallagher (Moon Township, PA/Moon Area) contributed game-highs of seven assists and six steals. Moore and McCray tied for team-high rebounding honors with six apiece.

Demetrick Walker scored 15 points and Ian Bates added 12 to pace the Tigers.

Shepherd (2-12, 2-7)  shot 41.8 percent (23-55) from the floor, 40.7 percent (11-27) from three-point range, and 56.8 percent (21-37) from the free throw line. Salem International (1-14, 1-8)  shot 48.1 percent (26-54) from the floor, 33.3 percent (2-6) from beyond the arc, and 66.7 (8-12) from the charity stripe. Salem outrebounded Shepherd, 36-33, but Shepherd forced 24 Salem turnovers while committing only 14.

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Glenville State for a 2 p.m. contest.
