SHEPHERD WOMEN RUN PAST WEST VIRGINIA STATE, 69-57 (1-9-2010)
INSTITUTE, W.Va.– Junior guard Carrie Saunders (Richmond, VA/Monacan) scored 17 points and senior center Camille Wilmer (Leesburg, VA/ Loudoun County) added 15 to lead Shepherd University to a 69-57 win over West Virginia State in WVIAC women’s basketball action at West Virginia State on Saturday.
Sophomore forward Shelby Fayak (Willowick, OH/Eastlake North) hauled down a game and career-high 14 rebounds and set a new program record with nine blocked shots. Junior guard Jerica Hewett (Keedysville, MD/Boonsboro) contributed 10 points, five steals, four rebounds, and three assists.
Shepherd (4-5, 3-2) also got a career-high 13 points from sophomore guard Melissa Furr (Herndon, VA/Chantilly). Wilmer grabbed eight boards, while Saunders and Furr had six rebounds.
Tonesha Members led West Virginia State (6-5, 2-4) with 25 points. Danielle Davis added 15 points and Sharena Atkinson had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Shepherd had a 36-24 lead at the break behind 13 first half points from Saunders.
Shepherd hit on 47.3 percent (26-55) of its field goal attempts for the game, while State managed only a 30.2 percent (19-63) effort. Shepherd had a 44-36 rebounding edge.
The Rams return to action on Thursday when they travel to Alderson-Broaddus for a 5:15 p.m. contest.
