CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Jonathan Higgins scored 23 points to lead University of Charleston to a 93-85 win over Shepherd University in WVIAC men's basketball action at Charleston on Thursday night.

Charleston (5-3, 4-0) got 19 points and 10 assists from Bahaadar Russell. James Eversley added 13 points, while John White had 12 points and a team-high 13 rebounds.

Senior guard Tyrone Roach (Capitol Heights, MD/Montgomery-Germantown) and junior forward Dave Karlson (Cameroon, Africa/Montgomery-Germantown) led the Rams with 17 points each as all five Ram starters hit in double figures. Junior guard Jonathan Motichka (Chambersburg, PA/Chambersburg) had 16 points in his season debut with 12 coming from three-point range.

Senior guard Derek Gallagher (Moon Township, PA/Moon Area) contributed 15 points, five assists, four boards, and three steals, while freshman forward Chad Moore (Winchester, VA/John Handley) had 13 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.

Both team shot well as Charleston hit on 50 percent (31-62) of its shots from the floor and Shepherd connected on 48.5 percent (32-66). Shepherd had a 36-35 edge in rebounds.

The Rams (1-7, 1-3) return to action on Saturday when they travel to West Virginia State for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
