VIENNA, W.Va. – Shepherd University (23-22) split a pair of games in first day action of the WVIAC Softball Tournament at Jackson Field on Thursday. Shepherd handed Charleston a 5-2 setback before dropping a 4-1 decision to West Virginia Wesleyan.
Senior outfielder Amy Edmondson (Hamilton, VA/Loudoun Valley HS/Mary Washington) belted a three-run homer and senior catcher Amanda Orkoskey (Wheeling, WV/Wheeling Central Catholic) added a solo blast and a double to pace the Ram attack in the win over Charleston. Sophomore outfielder Amber Dudek (Sterling, VA/Park View) added a 2-for- 4 outing.
Jana Salisbury went 3-for-4 and Logan Tetrick added a 2-for-3 effort for Charleston.
Freshman pitcher Tricia Bettura (Canfield, OH/Canfield) (10-8) went five innings to gain the win. Freshman pitcher Erica Snoddy (Salem, OH/Lisbon David Anderson) worked the final two innings to gain her second save of the year.
Patricia Moreno scattered four hits to lead West Virginia Wesleyan to a 4-1 win in the second game. Bettura (10-9) took the loss for the Rams.
Shepherd’s only tally came in the seventh when Dudek reached base on a walk and later scored on a single by sophomore third baseman Caitlin Davis (Manassas, VA/Osbourn).
Stephanie Wheeler and Katie Speaks each had two hits and drove in a pair of runs for the Bobcats.
The Rams return to action on Friday when they face Davis & Elkins at 11 a.m.
