SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Freshman pitcher Tricia Bettura (Canfield, OH/Canfield) belted a walk-off solo homer in game one and senior designated player Amanda Orkoskey (Wheeling, WV/Wheeling Central Catholic) smacked a three-homer in the nightcap to lift Shepherd University (22-17, 15-9) to a sweep of Glenville State (19-20, 15-9) in WVIAC softball doubleheader action at Shepherd on Thursday. The Rams gained a 2-1 win in game one and held on for a 4-3 victory in the nightcap.
Bettura broke a 1-1 tie when she led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk-off blast to right field. The freshman southpaw (8 Ks, 0 BB) scattered six hits to improve to 9-6. Mandy Parkulo took the loss for the Lady Pioneers.
Bettura went 2-for-3 to lead the Rams in game one.
Leanne Harris went 1-for-2 with an RBI-double to lead Glenville State.
Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the first in the nightcap when freshman shortstop Chelsie Oals (Hedgesville, WV/Hedgesville) doubled and later scored on a double by sophomore outfielder Amber Dudek (Sterling, VA/Park View).
Glenville State plated two runs on three hits and two Ram errors to take a 2-1 lead in the third.
The Rams staged a two-out rally in the sixth to take a 4-2 lead. Sophomore third baseman Caitlin Davis (Manassas, VA/Osbourn) and Dudek had back-to-back singles and Orkoskey launched a three-run blast to left center field.
The Lady Pioneers rallied with a run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Karly Eskew. Glenville had two on and two out when Erin Morgan lined to Davis at third base to end the contest.
Dudek led the Rams with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate with a run scored and an RBI.
Morgan Elswick, Lacey Williams, and Harris each had a pair of hits for the Lady Pioneers.
Freshman pitcher Erica Snoddy (Salem, OH/Lisbon David Anderson) (4 Ks, 1 BB) went the distance to improve to 7-1. Parkulo (12-14), who came on in relief of starter Laura Childers, took the loss.
The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to Wheeling Jesuit for a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
