SHEPHERD SOFTBALL SWEPT BY FAIRMONT STATE (4-16-2009)
FAIRMONT, W.Va. – Fairmont State (22-11, 14-4) swept Shepherd University (17-14, 11-7) in WVIAC softball doubleheader action at Fairmont on Thursday afternoon. Heather Shutler tossed a no-hitter in a 4-0 win in game one and the Falcons gained the sweep with an 8-0 win in the nightcap.
Senior outfielder Rae Johnson (Fredericksburg, VA/Colonial Forge HS), senior outfielder Amy Edmondson (Hamilton, VA/Loudoun Valley HS/Mary Washington), and sophomore pitcher Nichole Pitcock (Sterling, VA/Park View) all reached base via walks for the Rams in game one.
Brooke Keene went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Kristy Rausch added a 2-for-3 effort with a run scored and an RBI.
Shutler also fanned six to improve to 14-4 on the year. Pitcock (2 Ks, 0 BB) dropped to 6-8.
Rausch went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer and an RBI-single to pace the Falcons in the nightcap.
Johnson went 1-for-3 with a double to lead the Rams.
Falcon starter Katie Burgess scattered three hits over five innings to improve to 7-7. Freshman pitcher Tricia Bettura (Canfield, OH/Canfield) (3 Ks, 0 BB) took the loss to fall to 6-5 on the year.
The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to West Virginia Wesleyan for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
