SHEPHERD SOFTBALL SPLITS WITH WEST VIRGINIA STATE (4-4-2009)

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – Shepherd University (13-10, 9-3) split a pair of games with West Virginia State (16-11, 5-3) in WVIAC softball doubleheader action at West Virginia State on Saturday. The Rams took game one with a 1-0 triumph, while State rallied for a 10-7 win in the nightcap.

Freshman pitcher Tricia Bettura (Canfield, OH/Canfield) (5-3) scattered six hits to gain the win for the Rams in game one. She fanned six and walked one. Diana Humphreys took the loss for the Yellow Jackets.

Shepherd scored the game's only run in the fourth inning. Senior outfielder Amy Edmondson (Hamilton, VA/Loudoun Valley/Mary Washington) doubled, moved to third on a single by senior catcher Amanda Orkoskey (Wheeling, WV/Wheeling Central Catholic), and scored on a ground out by Bettura.

Kris Taylor hit a two-run homer and drove in five runs to lead the Yellow Jackets in the nightcap.

Shepherd was led by Orkoskey in the nightcap with a 3-for-4 effort with three RBIs. Senior outfielder Rae Johnson (Fredericksburg, Va/ Colonial Forge) had two hits, scored a pair of runs, and drove in two more. Sophomore third baseman Caitlin Davis (Manassas, VA/Osbourn) rapped a pair of hits and scored a run.

Cassie Nowery gained the win in relief to the Yellow Jackets, while sophomore pitcher Nichole Pitcock (Sterling, VA/Park View) (5-6) took the loss for the Rams.

The Rams return to action on Sunday when they host Ohio Valley for Senior Day. Doubleheader action is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
