Caitlin Davis belted a grand slam to help lift Shepherd to a 7-3 win in the nightcap.
SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Sophomore third baseman Caitlin Davis (Manassas, VA/Osbourn) belted a grand slam to highlight a five-run first inning in the nightcap to help lift Shepherd University to a 7-3 win to gain a split with University of Charleston in WVIAC softball action at Shepherd on Saturday. Charleston took the opener with a 6-3 victory.
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the first, senior outfielder Rae Johnson (Fredericksburg, VA/Colonial Forge HS) led off with a triple and later scored on a single by sophomore outfielder Amber Dudek (Sterling, VA/Park View). Senior outfielder Amy Edmondson (Hamilton, VA/Loudoun Valley HS/Mary Washington) walked and freshman pitcher Tricia Bettura (Canfield, OH/Canfield) singled to set the stage for Davis.
Charleston (15-12, 3-3) rallied with two in the second on a two-run double by Jana Salisbury to cut the lead to 5-3.
Shepherd (8-9, 4-2) added a pair of insurance runs in the third. Edmondson doubled and later scored on a double by freshman designated player Chelsie Oals (Hedgesville, WV Hedgesville). Bettura followed with a double to plate Oals.
Johnson, Bettura, and Edmondson each had a pair of hits to lead the Rams.
Salisbury went 3-for-3 and Micki Murzynski added a 2-for-2 effort for the Golden Eagles.
Bettura fanned four and walked none to improve to 4-3 on the year. Charleston starter Stefanie Rossman (1K, 1BB) took the loss.
The Golden Eagles took advantage of three Ram errors to score five runs in the fifth inning of the opener to pull away for the win. Ashlea Wallace and Murzynski each had two-run doubles to key the rally.
Sophomore shortstop Courtni Williams (Charles Town, WV/Musselman) went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a solo homer to pace the Rams in game one.
Rossman (4 Ks, 0 BB) picked up the win for Charleston. Sophomore pitcher Nichole Pitcock (Sterling, VA/ Park View) (7 Ks, 5 BB) took the loss for the Rams to fall to 4-5.
The Rams return to action on Sunday when they host Concord for a noon conference doubleheader.
