GREENSBURG, Pa. – Freshman pitcher Tricia Bettura (Canfield, OH/Canfield) tossed a two-hit shutout in the nightcap to give Shepherd University a 1-0 win to help the Rams gain a split with Seton Hill in WVIAC softball action at Seton Hill on Friday. Seton Hill won game one with a 2-0 triumph.
Bettura fanned 10 and walked four to improve to 3-3 on the year. Lyndsey Nusser (10 Ks, 0 BB) took the loss to drop to 6-4.
Senior outfielder Rae Johnson (Fredericksburg, VA/Colonial Forge HS) singled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by senior outfielder Amy Edmondson (Hamilton, VA/Loudoun Valley HS/Mary Washington) in the fourth inning for the game’s only run.
Sophomore first baseman Caitlin Davis (Manassas, VA/Osbourn) and senior catcher Amanda Orkoskey (Wheeling, WV/Wheeling Central Catholic) also singled for the Rams.
Erica Yates and Nusser each had singles for the Griffins.
Seton Hill (12-9, 4-2) took game one behind a solid pitching performance from Louanne Wiegand.
Wiegand tossed a four-hiiter to improve to 4-3 on the year. She fanned four and walked two. Sophomore pitcher Nichole Pitcock (Sterling, VA/ Park View) (6 Ks, 3 BB) took the loss for the Rams despite yielding only four hits as well. Pitcock’s record drops to 4-4.
Maggie Jones doubled to score Amy Kirby and Wiegand followed with a double to plate Jones for the game’s only runs in the third inning.
Sophomore shortstop Courtni Williams (Charles Town, WV/Musselman), Orkoskey, Davis, and Pitcock each had singles for the Rams.
The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Charleston for a 1 p.m. conference doubleheader.
