SHEPHERD WOMEN HOLD OFF FAIRMONT STATE, 55-53 (2-23-2009)
FAIRMONT, W.Va. – Senior guard Krissy Grosselin (Dayton, OH/Ramstein {Germany}) scored 18 points and senior forward Katie Warehime (Littlestown, PA/Littlestown) added 13 points and six rebounds to lead Shepherd University to a 55-53 win over Fairmont State in WVIAC women’s basketball action at Fairmont on Monday night.
Grosselin (1,230 career points), who moved into fifth place on the Shepherd all-time scoring list past former teammate Laura Harkins (1,225), hit on 7-of-15 shots from the floor with a 2-of-5 effort from three–point range. She was 2-of-4 from the charity stripe and also dished out a game-high four assists.
Sophomore guard Jerica Hewett (Keedysville, MD/Boonsboro) added eight points, seven rebounds, three assists. and a pair of steals.
Gabby Gattuso scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds to pace Fairmont State (16-9, 13-6). Ashley Vavrek added 19 points.
Shepherd (13-13, 10-9) shot 39.6 percent (21-53) from the floor for the game, while Fairmont State had a 40 percent (20-50) shooting performance. Both teams hit on 5-of-13 three-pointers (38.5 percent) and 8-of-14 free throws (57.1 percent).
Grosselin scored 12 points in the first half to lift the Rams to a 33-19 halftime advantage.
The Rams held an 11-point lead at 51-40 with 6:49 remaining in the game after a jumper by sophomore guard Carrie Saunders (Richmond, VA/Monacan). The Falcons rallied to within two points at 55-53 on a layup by Samantha Wanichko with 57 seconds remaining, but neither team would add a score as the Rams held on for the win.
The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to Pitt Johnstown for a 2 p.m. contest in the regular season finale.
