Jim Sweeney

Jim Sweeney enters his ninth year as head coach of the Shepherd women's soccer program.

His 2008 squad posted an 8-10 overall record and marked the sixth consecutive year that the Rams posted seven wins or more. The Rams gained shutouts in six of the eight victories.

Sweeney's 2005 team rebounded from a slow start to record the best season in program history. The Rams won 10 of their last 13 games en route to an 11-10-1 record with a 5-3-0 conference mark. The 11 wins, five conference wins, and third place regular season ranking were all new Shepherd bests. Shepherd also had its best showing in the WVIAC Tournament when they advanced to finals before falling to Wheeling Jesuit.

Sweeney's 2004 team tied school marks for most wins in a season (9) and most conference wins (4). His squad also set single game records for most goals in a game and largest margin of victory in a 20-0 win over Ohio Valley.

Sweeney led the Rams to a then team-record nine wins in 2003. His squad also set a new mark for conference wins with four. The 2003 Rams were ranked third in NCAA II in scoring with a 3.85 per game average. Individually, Kyla Heimburger led NCAA II in assists with an 0.94 average, while Erin Wilkinson was second in goals (1.45 per game) and third in points (3.10 per game).

Sweeney, a 1998 graduate of Albright College, was a four-year standout as a goalkeeper for the Lions. Sweeney broke numerous school records including most saves in a game (31), shutouts in a season (4), and career saves (698). He earned All-Conference honors at Albright and was a three-time team most valuable player.

After graduation, Sweeney served as an assistant at Albright for the men's team for three years (1998-2000). The 1999 Albright team set a school record for most wins with 10. Sweeney also worked as an assistant girl's soccer coach at Conrad Weiser High School in Wernersville, PA. He helped guide the team to the Berks County Championship title in 2000.

Sweeney has also had coaching stints with the Olympic Development Program in eastern Pennsylvania and most recently served as an assistant coach to both the men's and women's soccer programs at St. Edward's University in Austin, TX. He was the main assistant coach for the men's team, while working with the goalkeepers for both teams.

Sweeney currently holds a United States Soccer Federation "A" License. In addition to his coaching duties, Sweeney also serves as the director for the Shepherd University Wellness Center.
