The Shepherd University department of athletics is offering a schedule of low cost sports camps coming up in June and July. Included for girls are volleyball, basketball and softball; boys camps include football, basketball, and baseball plus soccer camps for boys and girls.

The Mountain East Conference (MEC) announced today that its application for membership has been approved by the NCAA Division II Membership Committee. The MEC will officially become the 25th NCAA Division II conference on Sept. 1, 2013 and immediately assumes active status.

Senior defender Robel Desta (Addis Abeba, Ethiopia/Springbrook {MD}) and senior forward Shane Lowery (Boonsboro, MD/Boonsboro) of the Shepherd University men's soccer team were recently named to the 2012 National Soccer Coaches of America (NSCAA) Division II All-Atlantic Region team. Desta gained first team honors, while Lowery was a second team selection. Both players gained All-Region accolades for the second time in their careers.
 

The 12 institutions that announced the formation of the Mountain East Conference in August have officially applied for approval to begin competing as the NCAA’s newest Division II conference in 2013-14. The MEC’s formal application, signed by the presidents of all 12 institutions, was hand-delivered to NCAA headquarters in Indianapolis on Friday along with all supporting documentation.

Five members of the Shepherd University men’s soccer team were named to the 2012 All-WVIAC Men's Soccer Team as announced by the conference office today. Senior forward Shane Lowery (Boonsboro, MD/Boonsboro) and senior defender Robel Desta (Addis Abeba, Ethiopia/Springbrook {MD}) were first team selections, while junior midfielder/forward Kevin Doyle (Leesburg, VA/Loudoun County), junior midfielder Griffin Frazier (Prince Frederick, MD/Calvert), and freshman defender Chris Mashinski (LaPlata, MD/North Point) gained honorable mention accolades.

Volleyball action slated for Tuesday at Wilmington (DE) has been cancelled, while Tuesday’s WVIAC Men’s Soccer Tournament action between Shepherd and Wheeling Jesuit has been postponed until Thursday with a 7 p.m. start at Wheeling Jesuit.

The Shepherd University soccer teams will be hosting Chowan University for Breast Cancer Awareness Day on Tuesday. The Rams will be wearing pink jerseys for the games. The women's game begins at 1 p.m. followed by the men's contest at 3 p.m.
