For the past two Mondays student-athletes from the Shepherd University baseball and softball teams began their day not on the practice field or in one of Shepherd’s classrooms. The Mountain East Conference (MEC) announced today that its application for membership has been approved by the NCAA Division II Membership Committee. The MEC will officially become the 25th NCAA Division II conference on Sept. 1, 2013 and immediately assumes active status.

The Shepherd University baseball team has been picked to finish second in the WVIAC North Division in the 2013 WVIAC Coaches' Poll. Seton Hill has been selected as the preseason favorite to win the 2013 West Virginia Conference Tournament championship and secure the league’s automatic NCAA Regional bid.

The 12 institutions that announced the formation of the Mountain East Conference in August have officially applied for approval to begin competing as the NCAA’s newest Division II conference in 2013-14. The MEC’s formal application, signed by the presidents of all 12 institutions, was hand-delivered to NCAA headquarters in Indianapolis on Friday along with all supporting documentation.

The Shepherd University Athletic Hall of Fame inducted four new members last Friday night at the annual induction banquet at the Clarion Hotel and Conference Center in Shepherdstown. Football standout Joe Reel ’72, Vic Holmes ’74 (men’s basketball, baseball), Greg Stup ’96 (football), joined women’s basketball coach Jodie Runner as the 27th class to be inducted. The "fabulous four" bring the total number of members in the Shepherd Athletic Hall of Fame to 129.

Shepherd University interim head baseball coach Matt McCarty recently announced that the Shepherd baseball program will be hosting a one day prospect camp on Sunday, October 28 at Fairfax Field. The camp is open to students ages 15-high school seniors (grades 9-12).

Tickets are on sale for the Shepherd University Athletic Hall of Fame banquet. Four new members will be inducted at the banquet on Friday, November 9 at the Clarion Hotel and Conference Center in Shepherdstown. The quartet will also be honored at the Shepherd-Fairmont State football game on Saturday, November 10 as part of Hall of Fame Weekend festivities.

Shepherd University director of athletics B.J. Pumroy announced today that Matt McCarty '10 has been elevated to interim head baseball coach and that Anthony Jackson '11 has been elevated from part-time assistant coach to interim full-time assistant coach for the 2012-13 academic year. Both of them were players in the 2009 season when the Rams won the WVIAC title and served as assistant coaches in 2012 when the team won the title.

Riser ‘89, and MA ‘08, a Hedgesville native, has been head baseball coach at Shepherd since 1991 and has amassed a cumulative record of 509-395-2.
 

Shepherd University will hold a bull roast on Saturday, September 8 following the Shepherd-American International football game at the Clarion Hotel and Conference Center from 6-10 p.m. Proceeds will be used to support the Shepherd baseball, softball, and women's lacrosse teams.

Shepherd University head baseball coach Wayne Riser announced more changes to this weekend's baseball schedule with Pitt-Johnstown due to a snow forecast for Johnstown. Shepherd will now host UPJ for a doubleheader at Fairfax Field on Saturday (Feb. 25) at 1 p.m. The two teams will also play a single nine inning game at Shepherd on Sunday (Feb. 26) at 1 p.m.

West Alabama swept Shepherd University in baseball action at Tartt Field on Friday. The Tigers earned an 11-2 win in game one and added a 4-0 triumph in the nightcap.

Changes have been made to this weekend's baseball schedule between Shepherd and West Alabama. Instead of playing three singles games over three days, the two teams will play doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday. Both doubleheaders will begin at 1 p.m.

Tusculum used a 13-hit attack en route to a 9-3 win over Shepherd University in baseball action at Pioneer Park on Wednesday.

The Shepherd University baseball team will travel to Tusculum College for a 4 p.m. contest on Wednesday at Pioneer Park. Tusculum (6-0) and Shepherd (1-1) were slated to play last Sunday in Asheboro, N.C. The game was called due to the inclement weather.

Shepherd University will be hosting a spring edition Ram Chalk Talk luncheon on Wednesday, February 2 from noon to 1 p.m. at the Shepherd University Wellness Center. The Division II Athletics Directors Association (DII ADA) recently announced that 16 Shepherd University student-athletes have been named the 2009-10 recipients of the DII ADA Academic Achievement Awards presented by WeatherPORT.

Twenty-five Shepherd University student-athletes have been selected to the 2009-10 WVIAC Commissioner's Honor Roll. Qualifying student-athletes are classified as a junior or senior and have obtained a 3.3 or higher cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale at the end of the term of attendance in which the sport was concluded.

Sophomore catcher Sean Zirkle (Fishersville, VA/St. Annes-Belfield) of the Shepherd University baseball team recently signed with the Waynesboro Generals of the Valley League. Click below for more information

Shepherd University head baseball coach Wayne Riser announced today that 15 student-athletes have signed letters-of-intent to play baseball for the Rams in 2011. Among the group are five players from both Maryland and Virginia, two from Pennsylvania, and one each from California, New York, and West Virginia.

Sophomore first baseman Nathan Minnich (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro) of the Shepherd University baseball team has been named WVIAC Player of the Week for his stellar play for the Rams last week. 

Shepherd University split doubleheader action with Millersville University in WVIAC baseball action at Fairfax Field on Wednesday. The Marauders earned an 8-3 win in game one, while the Rams rallied for a 3-2 triumph in the nightcap.

Former Shepherd University pitcher Charlie Gordon (Pasadena, MD/Chesapeake/Anne Arundel CC) has signed a professional baseball contract with the Normal CornBelters of the Frontier League. Gordon earned WVIAC Pitcher of the Week honors while at Shepherd and was a member of the WVIAC championship team in 2009. 

The Shepherd University baseball team has been tabbed as the favorite to repeat as WVIAC champions in the annual coaches' preseason poll.

Shepherd (26-15, 12-2) split with Seton Hill (29-12, 11-5) in WVIAC baseball doubleheader action at Seton Hill on Sunday. Shepherd earned a 3-1 win in game one, while Seton Hill took the nightcap with a 9-1 win. The split clinches the WVIAC Northern Division title for the Rams.

Shepherd University pounded out 30 hits on the day en route to a doubleheader sweep of Elizabeth City State in baseball action at Knobbs Creek on Friday. The Rams took a 15-0 win in the opener and earned the sweep with a 25-9 triumph in five innings in the nightcap.

The Shepherd University baseball team is ranked 10th in the 2009 National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Preseason Division II Atlantic Regional Poll. Shepherd is one of four WVIAC teams listed in the poll. The Rams posted a 29-21 overall mark in 2008 and will open the 2009 campaign on Feb. 13 at Armstrong Atlantic.
