SHEPHERD SOFTBALL DROPS PAIR TO #18 BLOOMSBURG (3-6-2012)
SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Shepherd University dropped a pair of games to #18 Bloomsburg in doubleheader softball action at Shepherd on Tuesday afternoon. The Huskies took a 4-2 win in game one and added a 5-1 victory in the nightcap.
Bloomsburg took a 3-0 lead in the second inning in game one. Erika Yanora smacked a two-run single to key the rally.
Shepherd rallied to within a run at 3-2 in the fifth. Senior third baseman Chelsie Oals (Hedgesville, WV/Hedgesville) and sophomore outfielder Jess Mason (Martinsburg, WV/Hedgesville) each had RBI-singles to highlight the rally.
Bloomsburg added an insurance run in the sixth when Yanora was hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded and held on for the win.
Oals and Mason each had a pair of hits to lead the Rams.
Yanora went 2-for-3 with three RBIs to lead the Huskies.
Cait Paine (6 Ks, 1 BB) picked up the win for the Huskies to improve to 5-0. Junior pitcher Tricia Bettura (Canfield, OH/Canfield) (7.0 IP, 4 Ks, 2 BB, 9 H, 4 ER) took the loss for the Rams to fall to 3-2.
Bloomsburg plated four runs in the first inning in the nightcap en route to a 5-1 triumph.
Shepherd’s lone run came in the fifth when junior outfielder Bianca Biondillo (Canfield, OH/Canfield) singled and later scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of freshman shortstop Taylor Bolton (Inwood, WV/Martinsburg).
Biondillo led the Rams with a 2-for-3 outing.
Kayla McHale went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs to lead Bloomsburg.
Mandi Black (5 Ks, 1 BB) went the distance for the Huskies to improve to 1-0. Junior pitcher Tiffany Biggs (Harpers Ferry, WV/Jefferson/Potomac State) (7.0 IP, 11 H, 3 ER, 6 Ks, 0 BB) took the loss to fall to 1-1.
Shepherd falls to 6-4, while Bloomsburg improves to 6-0. The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they host Millersville for a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader.
