SMITH, HALL LEAD SHEPHERD VOLLEYBALL HONOREES (11-12-2009)
PRINCETON, W.Va. -- Shepherd University head coach Sarah Smith was selected as WVIAC Coach of the Year and sophomore middle hitter Amanda Hall (Virginia Beach, VA/Cox) was named a first team All-WVIAC Volleyball Team choice to highlight a list of seven Shepherd volleyball individuals honored by the West Virginia Conference.
Smith has engineered a turnaround at Shepherd as this year's squad has bounced back from last season's 11-22 mark to stand 20-11 at the conclusion of the regular season. The Rams went 12-2 in WVIAC play to grab the second seed in the WVIAC Tournament after being forecast for eleventh place during the pre-season. The 2003 graduate of Bryant University owns a 69-90 career mark after five seasons at the Shepherd helm.
Hall became the first Ram volleyball player to gain first team honors since Kim Pirisino in 2002. Hall leads the Rams and is ranked fourth in the conference in attack percentage (.306) and kills (355). She has also added 176 digs, 92 blocks (25 solo), 17 aces, and 14 assists. She is a three-time WVIAC Player of the Week honoree.
Senior middle hitter Emily McCoy (Great Cacapon, WV/ Berkeley Springs)was a second team selection, junior libero Julie Robertson (Glen Allen, VA/Hermitage) and senior setter Jane Thompson (Cincinnati, OH/Walnut Hills) were honorable mention choices, while outside hitters Lauren Gardner (Clarkston, MI/Clarkston) and Kasey Mercier (Baltimore, MD/Mount de Sales Academy) were WVIAC All-Freshman selections.
McCoy paces the Rams and is ranked second in the WVIAC in blocks with a 1.12 per game average. She has also recorded 194 kills, 32 digs, 10 assists, and a pair of aces.
Robertson paces the Rams in digs with 432 for a 3.69 per game average. She has also added 24 assists, 14 aces, and a solo block.
Thompson has registered 410 assists for a 6.41 per game mark. She also added 91 digs, 16 aces, and seven blocks (one solo).
Gardner has recorded 233 kills, 253 digs, 33 blocks (one solo), 29 assists, and 23 aces on the season .
Mercier is second on the team in kills (252) and digs (287). She has also added 35 blocks (10 solo), 26 aces, and 21 assists,
